EMDR

The emotional wounds in our life, like the wounds on our body, don’t just disappear if we try to simply cover it up with a band-aid (distraction, substance abuse, workaholic, etc). Emotional wounds need care, nurture and ongoing follow-up to avoid it from negatively impacting our life.

  • Do you often feel haunted by a disturbing memory or past experience?
  • Does it feel like you often reliving those memories?
  • Is it hard to stop thinking about it?
  • Does thinking about it almost paralyze you (running out of breath, sweating, freeze response, numbing, dissociating, etc.)
  • Do you experience nightmares related to it?
  • Do you have awareness of a disturbing life experience that you can’t actually remember the details of?

With EMDR therapy you can feel more in control of your emotions, empowered by the very experiences that once debased you, transformation through old wounds and improved signs of emotional health and resolution.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal and find relief from the symptoms and emotional distress that are caused by a disturbing life experiences.

  • Childhood trauma
  • Single incident trauma
  • Chronic Trauma
  • PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Grief/Emotional Pain

Heena Khan, LPC-S, RPT-S is experienced in utilizing EMDR and fully trained by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

Wondering if EMDR is a good fit for you? Book a consultation or contact us to explore how EMDR can help you gain more control of the healing process.

Postpartum support

800,000 women annually are affected by perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
They are the number one complication of childbirth. Perinatal Mood Disorders include temporary and treatable conditions that occur during and/or after pregnancy.

Post Partum Depression
Post-Partum Anxiety and OCD
Post-partum Psychosis
Post-partum Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Left undetected and untreated, these conditions can lead to negative health outcomes for the mother, and can negatively affect the mother-child bond and the child’s long-term physical, emotional, and developmental health. Additionally, the financial cost of untreated maternal mental health conditions can be significant (for example, more use of emergency care services, higher rates of absenteeism at work).

The #1 complication from childbirth is postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression can happen during pregnancy or following childbirth, typically arising from the combination of hormonal changes, psychological adjustment to motherhood (even though it may not be their first child), and fatigue.

You may feel:

  • Anger or irritability
  • Lack of interest in the baby
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Crying and sadness
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or hopelessness
  • Feeling like life is not worth living
  • Loss of interest, pleasure, or joy in the things you used to enjoy
  • A general feeling that something is not right
  • Possible thoughts of harming yourself or the baby

Postpartum Anxiety is when you experience significant anxiety following childbirth.

You may feel:

  • Constant worry
  • Feeling that something bad is going to happen to baby, you or someone else
  • Racing thoughts
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Inability to sit still
  • Dizziness, hot flashes, nausea

Postpartum OCD is when you feel overwhelmed with obsessive thoughts and/or need to engage in compulsive behaviors. You may notice:

  • Persistent, repetitive thoughts or mental images about the baby.  (Also called Obsessions or Intrusive Thoughts). These thoughts are upsetting to the mother.  They may include thoughts of the baby being hurt.
  • Compulsions- the mother does the same behavior repeatedly, usually in order to avoid “harm.”  This may include excessive cleaning, locking doors, counting things, organizing things.
  • A sense of horror about these thoughts
  • Fear of being left alone with the baby
  • Hypervigilance about protecting the baby

A person with Postpartum Psychosis has become detached from reality. It is rare, affecting about 1-2 women of every 1,000 births.  Postpartum Psychosis is considered a medical emergency, and you should seek help immediately by calling your doctor, a mental health crisis line or by going to the emergency room.

Symptoms include:

  • Delusions or strange belief
  • Hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not there)
  • Feeling irritated
  • Hyperactivity
  • Inability to sleep or not needing to sleep
  • Feeling paranoid or suspicious
  • Rapid mood swings
  • Difficulty communicating at times

Remember, perinatal mental health disorders are temporary and treatable. Get help as soon as you can.

Individual counseling – With individualized one-on-one support cope with your ups and downs and feel like yourself again.

*All postpartum services are provided by Heena Khan, LPC, RPT, she has advanced training in maternal mental health.

What is Trauma Informed Yoga?

When we think of the word trauma, we often associate it with an experience like war, violence or a catastrophe. We don’t see ourselves as a survivor of trauma, because we may not know how trauma is actually defined.

Trauma is any deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms our capacity to cope

This could be the loss of a family member, a divorce, a breakup, illness, a house fire, a bad accident, any kind of abuse, addiction in the family etc. It can also include secondary or vicarious trauma, which is the experience from indirect exposure to trauma, like watching a neighbor’s house on fire-it’s not your home but the indirect exposure can also cause you to have a traumatic experience.

When you experience trauma, your body automatically responds with either fight (stay there and fight it off), flight (run for your life), or freeze (brain shutdown). All 3 of these are normal ways our brain reacts to protect it from harm and move it to safety.

Our bodies will often absorb this trauma and when we don’t process the trauma, it stays in our body and we start to experience symptoms of anxiety and trouble regulating emotions even long after the traumatic event has passed.

  • We assume that anyone attending the class has experienced some form of trauma
  • We believe you are the expert on your body and experience
  • We encourage you to take control of each pose, knowing that everybody is different and there is no “ideal” body shape.
  • We cultivate a judgement-free, safe, comforting and empowering space for all
  • We are aware that some poses/props can make you feel vulnerable and empower you to modify them accordingly.
  • We always “invite” you to transitions and poses, again empowering you to make the choice.
  • We refrain from any hands-on assists, and always ask for permission if you need assistance.
  • Our goal is to help you attain calmness through your breath, postures and movements.

Yoga allows you to feel more connected and aware of your inner true experience.

Frequently asked questions

Therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills, enhanced coping strategies from a licensed professional for concerns such as anxiety, depression, unresolved childhood trauma/grief, stress management, relationship troubles, body image, self-esteem, etc.

A licensed professional counselor (LPC) is professional who has acquired years of graduate study and experience in the the field of counseling. Trained and licensed professionals not only listen empathically, but also assist people in becoming more aware and gain insight into their triggers, fears, experiences, expectations and goals by reflecting on their lives in a non-threatening, non-judgemental and genuine manner. Most importantly, a licensed professional is answerable to a licensing board, which expects that all licensed professionals practice with the highest level of professionalism, integrity and ethics.

This is a very difficult question to answer since everyone’s experience, ability to cope, resources, healing is all very unique and personal. During our work together, we will periodically discuss goals and length of counseling.

Consistency is an important part of therapy and growth. If counseling services are difficult for you to afford at this point, in order to provide consistent therapy for yourself, we would be happy to provide you with some referrals in the community that provide therapy services for community members on a sliding scale based on your hardship. Please send us an email at info@uplift-counseling.com.

If you would like to bring a family member, it is important for you to discuss this with your counselor ahead of time so both client and counselor can discuss and decide whether this would be therapeutic.
